There are those in the masses of MMA fandom that do not enjoy the UFC’s attempts to become a really global brand and find ways in the European marketplace, especially the UFC 122 lines event which will be hosted in Oberhausen Germany on November 13th.
And it is not that these enthusiasts are anti-European or anti German. It’s just that the roster for this German smack down is not the best. As we discovered last month with the UFC 120 event hosted in London England, planners tend to heap the fighting roster with home grown expertise (or at least European expertise) in an effort to build a larger lover base in the massive Euro market which has to date declined MMA as a sporting possibility.
The UFC 122 betting competition will offer 3 German competitors and many other European competitors. The main issue with this is that the German MMA scene is relatively modest and almost none of German competitors in the UFC 122 lines competition are known outside of their towns or cities and particularly not to most of the UFC enthusiasts. So even though there are more Germans than typical on the card, they won’t be met with extra support from enthusiasts.
The game of MMA has been met with severe critique in the nation by its press and government. It’s earlier headed to minors being forbidden from the first German UFC event, UFC 99, and this it year it is headed to the sport being forbidden from being telecast entirely. The Germans have determined the “extent of violence shown to be unacceptable” and so the event will be shown by tape delay on Spike TV here in the u.s., but not in any way in the nation it is actually being hosted in.
The reality that the Main Card headlining fight in the UFC 122 betting competition features Nate Marquardt and Yushin Okami in a competition in which the champion is not even certain a shot at the division title says a good deal about the expertise level of the competition in Oberhausen.
But that does not automatically mean bad news for the MMA enthusiasts looks to play the UFC 122 lines. While these competitors may not be pretty well known and never amount to much on the UFC fighting scene, their comparative anonymity provides plenty of betting chance for the intelligent enthusiasts ready to do a bit of homework and discover a bit more about these unknown competitors.
Consider for example Pascal Krauss, a German welterweight who is scheduled to compete against Englishman Mark Scanlon on the Preliminary card. He is 6’1″, 170 lbs and he’s never lost an MMA contest in his life. He’s got a ideal 9-0 record in MMA competition, 7 of the wins by submission. He could be next huge point in UFC!
Think about Karlos Vemola, the Czech fighter nicknamed the “Terminator” with a 7-1 record, who will be looking to wipe the mat with American Seth Petruzelli in the light heavyweight division.
There is plenty of relatively unknown expertise out there only waiting to be found and wager on by MMA enthusiasts in the forthcoming UFC 122 Main Event.
