The Chiefs signed Eric Berry to a six-year package worth up to $60 million although he has yet to play a down in the NFL or influence NFL gambling probabilities. Berry was the 5th in total pick in the NFL Draft and he could be a celeb competitor but those who make an NFL bet are surprised by the amount of money being paid to a rookie safety.
NFL wagering probabilities post the Chiefs as underdogs to win the Super Bowl this season. Getting Eric Berry could be a great move for Kansas City as he was the 1 impact competitor in the NFL Draft. Having to pay him $60 million though is another story. The NFL has a serious problem with rookie salaries that they’ve got to address and it could be that a lockout will be needed to change the system.
Rookies are getting way a lot of income in the NFL. Several NFL owners are sick and tired of it since it has been this way for years. The Chiefs paid Tyson Jackson a lot of money as a rookie and he has done practically nothing thus far. He’s not the only competitor who didn’t meet his big contract. JaMarcus Russell got millions of dollars from the Raiders before he ever played a down, and he was a serious bust in Oakland.
When you actually look at the contract that Berry earned from the Chiefs you have to shake your head. He’s going to be given more money than a top safety like Troy Polamalu who has already established himself in the NFL. That is not to state that Berry won’t be a great NFL competitor. When competitors are paid before they even play a down it’s a poor business decision, even if he could turn out to be amazing in the NFL picks.
Kansas City is a 70-1 longshot to win the Super Bowl this season however they do compete in a division wherein they could win some games. The AFC West has the Chargers, Raiders and Denver Broncos and although the Chargers are heavy favorites in the division, they’ve yet to do anything at all in the playoffs. Kansas City could be a team that is worth taking with an NFL bet occasionally this season.
The last time the Chiefs went to a Super Bowl was in 1970. Although they won versus the Minnesota Vikings, they have not made an appearance, let alone earned a win, in the championship game since. This is going to be just the 2nd season for new head coach Todd Haley. Last season the franchise finished 4-12 which was actually an improvement on the previous season’s entirely dismal 2-14 track record. It’ll be incredible to see them pull ahead this season since they finished 4-12 in 2007 also.
The Chiefs first game in the preseason was vs Berry’s hometown of Atlanta. Berry got off to a quality start when he tackled Atlanta’s Eric Weems on the starting kickoff, even though Kansas City was defeated with a score of 10-20 by the Falcons.
